Konferenz "(In)Visible Traces – 20th Century Cultural Heritage in Danger" (3.-6. März)

Kostenfreie Altstadttour als Begleitprogramm
10 Uhr

The English-language conference brings together experts, researchers, artists, and representatives of civil society organizations from across Europe to open a discussion on neglected and endangered sites of violence and suffering that shaped the twentieth century. A special focus will be placed on neglected sites related to the Holocaust and other genocides from World War II, as well as sites of political repression from the Cold War.

Based on the fact that many places of suffering throughout Europe remain invisible, decontextualized, or forgotten, the conference will address important challenges such as the lack of institutional protection, historical revisionism, and the role of culture, education, and art in making these places visible in the public sphere.

Neglected places associated with the Holocaust and other sites of genocide during World War II, as well as abandoned places historically linked to the Cold War, are not merely superficial topics.

They are key to how Europe understands itself and its shared past. The collection of different views in Dresden shows that memory is not only important for preserving the past, but also for shaping future ethical and political frameworks.

Through dialogue, research, artistic engagement, education, and advocacy, the themes of the Holocaust and the Cold War can serve as examples of how difficult legacies should be addressed.
